DSL vs cable modem
Kathleen and I wanted to poll the community regarding whether DSL or cable hi-speed internet would be better to get once we move. We currently use old-fashioned modem dial-in at home (free through U of C), so we don't have any real experience with either DSL or cable modems. What do you all think? We appreciate any and all information and suggestions. Thanks!

DSL is cheaper, but I think you can get some kind of deal with cable if you buy it in some kind of package with your cable TV and maybe voice-over IP phone system. Some people here in Hawai`i have managed to get DSL prices on their cable modem service by threatening to switch if the cable company wouldn't lower the monthly fee for them. ;o)

Having had both, I've been about equally satisfied. The technical difference is that a cable connections is shared among all the people in your circuit and DSL is an individual connection. The upshot of this is that on cable, at peak usage time, your service slows down (How much depends on the number of people using it).

At my office, we just switched from DSL to cable because the service we got from our carrier was horrible and they didn't support a VPN, but at home, i've not had any trouble. Prices are comparable, with Cable usually being a bit less expensive in the Northwest where we live. Hope that's helpful. Let me know if you have questions.

Cable is vastly superior. You get a multi-product discount with your cable provider, and you don't need a land line, which is pretty much an unnecessary expense in the age of cell phones.

An unnamed (non government, haha) source tells me that a potential problem with DSL lies in repair service when you have an outage. With cable, if there's an outage, it typically affects a so-many-mile radius including yourself, so the cable company is likely to work on fixing the problem quickly, whereas with DSL, if you have an outage, it's probably just affecting you, which means they can afford to take longer to fix it.
